After six years of extreme self-denial in the forest of Urivila on the banks of the Nairanjana River, Siddhartha, the Prince and future King, gave up these austere practices. He bathed in the river, accepted a bowl of food and went south to cross the river.
Under a large Bodhi Tree - the tree of Wisdom - in the dense forest he found a place where he could sit and meidtate undisturbed.
It is said he vowed, "Even if it means death, I will not rise from this seat until I have found and attained Supreme Enlightenment."
He may have meditated for two weeks, three weeks or even seven weeks. Whatever the lentgh of time, it was an intense and incomparable struggle. He did not stir, open his eyes or intake food. He survived on the Nectar of the Gods. His mind was desperate to find God, and filled with confusing thoughts. Patiently he examined these thoughts one by one and rejected all of them.
On the morning of December 8th, the struggle was over and his mind was clear. He was thirty-five years of age when he became Buddha - the Enlightened One.
We give you a vision now of your brethren, kneeling around the altar in the temple of the Eight Pointed Star. With the body in the lotus position, they are worshipping the ever-glowing light of the jewel of the White Lotus Blossom. This White Lotus glows in the glory of every heart. The jewel within this lotus - the glow of the Ruby - is so pure and still. As you meditate on this you will learn real wisdom. You will learn to go directly to this jewel hidden deep within you, and here, in a timeless flash, you will comprehend the truth. Not with your mind, but with your heart.
Meditation is the beginning of finding the Pathway to Inner Peace. Do not stop the practice of meditation at any cost, once you have begun. Go inward deeper and deeper. Experience the Bliss of the Divine in every sitting. Remember that bliss and calmness as you go through your day. Begin to increase the duration of your meditation on a weekly basis. Begin with 20 minutes and work your way up to one hour, 5 minutes at a time. Add 5 minutes at the end of every week until you can sit for an hour. Your body will begin to crave this time alone with the Self. If you skip a day, you will notice it. As you increase youe meditation intensity, you receive more bliss, and the more bliss you receive, the more you will want ot meditate.
Sit with your back straight, both feet flat on the floor, unless you choose the LOTUS position for meditation. (You may sit in a straight back chair, up on the bed with pillows at your back, or on the floor in the Lotus position.)
Take some deep breaths and allow your body to begin to relax. Close your eyes and concentrate on the center of the brow ridge, between both eyes. This area is known as the Third Eye. Begin to clear your mind. This can be quite difficult or seem impossible to you, but give yourself time to adapt to this new way of prayer. Continue to sit, trying not to be resltess, for at least 15 minutes, 20 minutes is best. It is good to meditate first thing in the morning, for daily clarity.
Listen to your breathing and allow yourself to go deep inside. At first you may be discouraged and feel you'll "never get it." But you must press on - play some soft music if you desire. Light a candle and fix yourself a small alter.
If you continue to meditate daily, you may begin to have some inner visions or awareness. These may be recorded in a diary and you may e-mail Elizabeth Joyce for explanation and clairification. elizabeth@visions of reality If you should have a disturbing vision, do not let that upset you. Drink some water, make a note of the visions, and e-mail Visions of Reality for discussion.
Do not disclose your meditaion experiences to anyone as this can dissipate the power you are beginning to build up within yourself.
If you have been doing some prayer worship, or chanting mantras, this may also be done at meditation time - either before or after the sitting - but not during the sitting. It is good to chant an affirmation several times over before the sitting. (An example is given above. )
If you are practicing Pranayama (breath work), you may do this practice before the meditation. Pranayama should not be done for more than 15 minutes.
Working your Chakras, the etheric organs of the body, is excellent to practice before meditation. For a specific guided meditation, Chakras for the Body by Elizabeth Joyce should be listened to every day before the actual sitting.
Practicing meditation regularly and with devotion will help to fulfill your desires and improve your relationships in the course of time.
Know the Truth through meditation. Then you yourself will know who you are. You will open to your true religion, your soul's purpose and your inner nature. You will strenghten your character. Meditation creates your purpose and open up the pathway to Wisdom, Knowledge and Enlightenment.
